  • FAQs
    • When should I use the Caffeine Kick?

For a kick to get home in the later stages of an event, for a boost to tackle a tough part of the course, or for a mental lift before the start are all ideal times to use 1-2 squares of the Caffeine Kick.

    • Does Caffeine improve physical performance?

Caffeine raises physiological and nervous function within the body which can reduce fatigue and increase alertness, thus resulting in improved performance (Guedes, et al., 2012). Early studies showed caffeine gave a 20-50% increase in time to exhaustion amongst trained cyclists working at 80% of VO2max (Costill, DL., 1978). More recent studies presented decreased fatigue and increased time to exhaustion amongst runners by up to 60% (Astorino, 2012). Learn more about the benefits of caffeine in our blog article here.

    • Does Caffeine improve mental performance?

Caffeine has been found to significantly decrease reaction times when used at doses as low as 32 mg and as great as 600 mg (Jacobson and Edgley, 1987). Caffeine can also reduce mood changes associated with sleep deprivation, meaning caffeine can be a big benefit for multi-day events, stage races or even during night periods of ultra events.

    • Does Caffeine in a Pocket Rocket work faster than a gel?

Caffeine has been shown to enter the blood stream, and therefore exhibit pharmacological effects, significantly quicker when chewing is involved (Kamimori et al., 2002). This is because the Caffeine Kick melts in the mouth and caffeine can be absorbed through the buccal mucosa (lining of cheeks and gums) rather than through the stomach and intestine when swallowed.

    • What does Taurine do?

Taurine is an amino acid which has been linked to reductions in fatigue and also has a calming effect on the heart rate, which is ideal when used in conjunction with caffeine as in the Caffeine Kick bar. When co-ingested the two can reduce perceptions of effort and taurine has also been shown to reduce muscular fatigue (Warskulat et al., 2004), and support thermoregulation of the body during physical activity. Read our blog about taurine and its benefits here.

    • Does caffeine affect heart rate?

Caffeine stimulates the autonomic nervous system which can lead to a slight elevation in heart rate, and an increase in the force of contraction of the heart beat. (Corti et al., 2002) The Caffeine Kick also contains Taurine which can help stabilise the heart rate.

    • How much caffeine should I have for performance?
    • How much caffeine is in a Caffeine Kick Pocket Rocket?

The VOOM Caffeine Kick packs a punch with 175mg of caffeine per bar, equivalent to just over 2 cans of Red Bull, or 2 - 3 average strength coffees! This relatively high dose is used to create an energy bar that people can rely on to give them a real mental and physical lift. With the portionability of the Pocket Rocket you can effectively dose your energy and caffeine intake.

    • What is the maximum daily caffeine intake?

In a healthy adult population a daily caffeine intake of 400mg per day does not pose any health risks (EFSA - European Food Standards Agency). Additionally, single doses of caffeine of up to 200mg do not give rise to any safety concerns either.

    • How many bars can I take in one event?

We recommend not taking more than 2 - 3 Caffeine Kick Pocket Rockets in 24 hours (350 - 525mg), and this is typically only necessary during long distance ultra events. The unique design of the bar means you can pace your caffeine intake one piece (approx 44mg) at a time. 400mg caffeine per day has been shown to be safe intake.

Feel a Real Caffeine Kick!

The Caffeine Kick packs 175mg of caffeine to reduce perception of effort, aid focus and fight fatigue. The bar also contains taurine which when co-ingested with caffeine can boost peak power output (Ozan et al., 2022) giving a tangible improvement in sporting performance.
